The erythropoietin receptor (EPOR) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the EPOR gene. EPOR is a 59 kDa peptide and is a member of the cytokine receptor family. The cytoplasmic domains of the EPOR contain a number of phosphotyrosines that are phosphorylated by Jak2 and serve as docking sites for a variety of intracellular pathway activators and Stats. Defects in the erythropoietin receptor may produce erythroleukemia and familial erythrocytosis. Overproduction of red blood cells increases a chance of adverse cardiovascular event, such as thrombosis and stroke. EPOR signaling prevents neuronal death and ischemic injury.
